Backup Deals for World Backup Day
Although we at TidBITS have designated every Friday the 13th as International Verify Your Backups Day, this Thursday the 31st has also just become an important day for protecting your data: World Backup Day. If you already back up regularly, be sure to check your backups to make sure you can restore your data, and if you aren’t yet backing up regularly, there’s no better day to start — especially since a number of online backup providers have special deals to celebrate. Those we know about currently include:
-
SpiderOak is giving away 100 GB of free online storage to ten @WorldBackupDay Twitter followers who tweet using the hashtag #worldbackupday.
-
BackBlaze is also giving unlimited online storage for a year to ten @WorldBackupDay Twitter followers who use the #backblaze hashtag.
-
CrashPlan is giving away a 1-year unlimited subscription to five Twitter followers who tweet about celebrating World Backup Day. Details at the CrashPlan blog linked here.
-
Dolly Drive is offering everyone who is subscribed to their Time Machine-based backup service by the end of the day on 31 March 2011 a chance to win a year of free storage (up to 250 GB) and an 8 GB iPod touch.
-
MiMedia, an online storage and backup provider, is offering everyone who uses the promo code FRIEND25 a 25 percent discount any storage plan. Note that MiMedia does not yet have a Mac client, restricting Mac users to their Web interface.
-
Finally, if you want to learn more about backup in general, online backup in particular, and which online backup provider Joe Kissell especially recommends (hint, they’re in the list above), you can save 50 percent on either the 228-page “Take Control of Mac OS X Backups, Fifth Edition” ($7.50 after the discount) or the 108-page “Take Control of Easy Mac Backups” ($5 after the discount). Both of these books also contain a 10-percent-off coupon for Joe’s recommended online backup provider. Which book is right for you? In the former, Joe provides
a comprehensive overview of the world of backups while helping you set up a rock-solid backup strategy. And in the latter, he provides a concise, just-do-what-I-say approach to setting up your backups. The discount is good from now until the end of the day on 31 March 2011.
Hi! Thanks for the write up!
Just to clarify, you need to be following @WorldBackupDay and tweet one of the hashtags to get entered into the contest.
Here is a little history. A bunch of users on Reddit last week decided that there should be more awareness around backups and especially the upkeep of backup restores. This has resulted in designating March 31st as World Backup Day. A fellow redditor helped design the website and we even managed to have a couple of giveaways donated by SpiderOak, Backblaze, and Crashplan to help spread the word.
You can check out our Facebook Page (http:/www.facebook.com/WorldBackupDay) and our twitter feed @WorldBackupDay (www.twitter.com/WorldBackupDay) for more info.
Remember to not only backup your data, but also check your backup restores!
Thanks, I've clarified the article now!

No Mac client?
"Can I use MiMedia if I'm on a Mac?
Not yet, but support for Mac OS X is on the way. We plan to introduce MiMedia for Mac OS X later in 2011, however you can still login to MiMedia Online and upload, access and share your media from any computer with an Internet connection."
Thanks for the detail, Marc. At least there's a Mac client on the way.
