You mentioned scanning. For scanning with my HP office jet pro 8620, I use Image Capture. I do not use Image Capture for any other need. I use Preview a lot (concatenating PDF, make screen copies...). Can Preview do the same as Image Capture for scanning ?
Yes, Preview has essentially the same features as Image Capture (I'd say exactly the same, but I haven't done a complete comparison).
Cool ! thanks. I tried. In what I do, scanning and saving as PDF in Preview seems even easier than what I used to do with Image Capture.
You also mention PDF being the best format for reading with iBook (better than EPUB for the mac and the iPad). One week ago, I have successfully purchased my first electronic book from the Take Control Books bookstore. It is 1Password. I used the EPUB format, downloaded it on the mac and struggled to synchronize it on my 3 devices (mac, iPad mini and iPhone 5C). Now, having a doubt, I re-downloaded it, in PDF format this time. I have not succeeded to put it on the iBook cloud based library (don't event know where it is). Even when I move its PDF file on the iBook icon on the dock, of if I select the PDF file and right-clic it to "Open in iBooks" the book only opens on Preview on the mac (I have specified Preview to open all PDF on the mac, could that be the cause ?). The EPUB book has now disappeared from "Books" in iTunes and from the iPad but not from iBook on the mac and the PDF version is still not on "Books" in iTunes and on the iPad, but is on iBooks on the mac, where it opens with Preview. Seems like I am getting it all wrong. How should I do ? TIA
iBooks on the Mac can't read PDF; it hands all PDFs off to Preview. (iBooks in iOS can read PDFs.)
If it works, the easiest way to sync books between devices is to turn on syncing within iBooks itself. Try turning on syncing in iBooks > Preferences > General on the Mac, and in Settings > iBooks > Sync Collections in iOS. It's a flaky system though, so if it doesn't work, you can always resort to messaging or emailing the file to yourself.
Got it !!! In the mac, on iBooks>Preferences>General, syncing was "On". On the iPad, on Settings>iBooks>Sync collections was "On" also. But on the iPad, on Settings>iCloud>iCloud Drive, iBooks was ticked "Off" while it was "ON" on the mac. Turning it "On" on the iPad corrected immediately the default and both books magically appeared on the iPad's iBook (EPUB and PDF). Thanks.
