Apple Board Meets, Apple Confirms Newton Resorption

Apple’s board of directors is meeting in person today for the first time since the changes made during Boston Macworld Expo (see Microsoft is Jobs #1 in TidBITS 392, 11-Aug-97). The meeting is not regularly scheduled, and we expect topics of discussion to include the clone licensing situation and CEO candidates (the name of Bud Tribble, who worked with Jobs at Apple and NeXT and is currently at Sun Microsystems, has come up in relation to a high-ranking Apple post, though not necessarily CEO). In related news, a company spokeswoman confirmed to Reuters yesterday that, as we reported last week, Apple has plans to retain the Newton unit. We hope a positive resolution to the clone licensing situation emerges from the meeting.
