Speed Doubler 8 adds Mac OS 8 Compatibility

Connectix has shipped Speed Doubler 8, a long-awaited upgrade that’s compatible with Mac OS 8 and adds a few new features. Speed Doubler 8 improves performance of local and network file copies, disk caching, and (on PowerPC systems) includes a dynamic recompilation 68K emulator that can be almost twice as fast as Apple’s – handy when using 68K programs and system components, like AppleScript. Speed Doubler 8 can now schedule file copies and folder synchronizations, plus (perhaps trying to fill the gap created by Now Utilities’ absence under Mac OS 8, or to enhance Speed Doubler’s utility to 68K users) navigate menus of many applications without a mouse and assign hot keys to common tasks, such as opening a file or typing a block of text. Speed Doubler 8 requires System 7.5.5 or later (some features require Mac OS 8), and a 68030 processor or better. Speed Doubler 8 costs about $50, and Connectix says it should be available in quantity by mid-October. Speed Doubler 8 includes a $25 mail-in rebate for current Speed Doubler owners; if you bought Speed Doubler between 01-Jun-97 and 30-Oct-97 and live in North America, Connectix will ship you an update for just shipping and handling charges if you download and send in an update coupon. Connectix expects to release German and French versions of Speed Doubler 8 this fall.
