TidBITS: Comments on Apple Previews iOS 6 for Fall Release

iOS 6 provides maps with turn-by-turn directions, encourages Siri to provide more results, lets a lost phone’s finder call you, and gives you the option to sleep through annoying 2 AM calls. It’s due out in the third quarter of 2012, likely at the same time as the next iPhone model.

I'm sure we'll see a Google Maps app, since they'll tout their maps as being better. Given the kerfluffle over Google apps earlier (Google Voice), Apple can't ban them without facing government inquiry. As long as Google codes the app according to guidelines, I'm sure it will be a maps alternative.

Hasn't Apple in the past barred apps from the App Store because they "duplicated built-in functionality"? I'd imagine Apple would not want to do with with Google and Maps (anti-competitive behavior, FCC, FTC, etc.), but how will they explain the difference to those who've already been removed from the App Store for the same reason?

Presumably, Google is still able to serve its own Maps app for iOS (with Street View) if it chooses. I've read elsewhere where Google is being booted off iOS, but is that true? It sounds like hyperbole to me. What is to stop Google from competing with the new Apple app? Nothing that I know of. The Apple version might spur Google to significantly upgrade the current (Google) Maps app, which isn't a bad thing.

I was hoping tabbed browsing on mobile Safari would be improved with iOS 6.

I'd like to be able to swipe left and right on the current webpage to switch tabs. It seems like the most natural iPhone surfing "feature" to me.

But yet, here we are at iOS 6 and still no mention of anything like that. :(

It's a diminishing market. The answer is to get rid of a home phone and just use a cell phone. There are products that let you use an iPhone like a traditional handset, so you don't need to all around with the cell phone on your ear.

Somebody needs to disrupt the home phone business. I have been yearning for a home phone system that includes Do Not Disturb, very like iOS6: Don't ring when I'm sleeping unless the call is from certain numbers. The urgent call (twice in 3 minutes) feature that Apple has is a brilliant addition.

But, there is no disruption in the home phone business. Look at the phone listings on Amazon for example: loads of look-alike candybar cordless handsets with charging bases. Why does nobody have a radio-equipped base with a wired, comfortable to hold, old-fashioned handset attached (to keep the radiation away from your brain)? No, they are *all* the same. Just like cellphones before the iPhone.
