TidBITS: Comments on New App.net Social Network Aspires Beyond Chat and Ads

App.net appeared from nowhere, raised $800,000 to launch a social networking system with huge similarities to Twitter, and has 15,000 people who have paid at least $50 for a year’s membership. Does it really think it can beat Twitter and Facebook at their own games? Not at all.

You haven't bothered with it for about 2 weeks because you don't want to deal with another social network that has reach [at the moment] too small to be interesting. That makes perfect sense.

Why did you join?

The fee didn't limit you. The fee doesn't limit the audience. The early adopters are paying for more than the service. They're paying to make it succeed. Others wouldn't pay for it right now even if it was cheapePrice will probably drop over time. My $50 is well spent if it takes off & a wise investment if it doesn't. Others won't pay for it until it's more valuable to them

Open networks? What open networks are more interesting? The ones with more users? When you say 'open', do you mean 'free', like Myspace?:)

Spite? Nah! Hubris maybe but not spite.

Diaspora had a fair go. Not every business model can succeed.

You're hoping that you can ignore app.net until it goes away or becomes useful to you. Others are paying attention to it so that it does become useful.

I'm not a fan of App.net. I joined, but I haven't bothered with it for about two weeks and I probably won't be using it. I don't want to deal with another social network, and app.net's reach is too small to make it interesting.

Also, I think it's a really bad idea. The fee seriously limits the audience, and without wide appeal, I doubt if it will ever be as interesting as open networks. Plus, it feels like it was built simply to spite Twitter and reeks of sour grapes. No network built on spite has ever been successful - remember Diaspora?

I'm hoping I can continue to ignore app.net until it finally goes away.

"appnetziens"... curious as to what users will ultimately be called, and what their "tweets" will be known as. It wasn't obvious for Twitter in the beginning either. Tweaker's sending tweaks fits the dev and tech world.
