AT&T’s new Mobile Share plans seemed like a bad deal at first, but wound up the right fit for Glenn Fleishman’s family. Depending on your usage patterns, they may be worth a look for you as well.

I am in similar situation - 2 smartphones (one of which is iphone with unlimited data) and we pay around $125 (+ or - $5 depending on texting). The 4GB share plan (which would be plenty) would cost around $150. Tempted still as for another $10 I can add a tablet and also have access to tethering.

Wish they offered a lower cost for set amounts of minutes & texts as we are very low on both.

On these types of articles, I'd appreciate a table comparing the plans. I'm a visual reader and if the graphics are appealing, I'll read the article, else, this stuff makes my head spin.

What you're omitting from your math here is that it's not the same plan. Unlimited talk and text, this ups the monthly access fee per phone. You're probably paying minimal access fees for your 2 feature phones. In fact, based on $180/mo for the account you describe, I know you're paying minimal for those phones. However, your math is actually a bit off here. If you're looking to go 4 smartphones and 4GB, that'd be $230/mo. If it's just the 3 smartphones now and no feature phone, it's $190/mo, with 3 smart and 1 feature, $220/mo.

I just switched. I have 5 iphones and are about to add 2 more. I get a discount on my account from ATT and was paying about 60 bucks a month for each phone all with unlimited data and text. With the new share plans were paying about 45 bucks each sharing 10 gb. After I add 2 more lines it will be about 40.

The reason you are paying 30.00 for the one "dumb" phone is that it now has unlimited talk. ( I believe Verizon used to charge 50.00 for each secondary of unlimited talk on its family plans )I realize that this person does not use that much talking but they will have access to it. At 9.99 they shared from your set bucket of minutes. You can't compare an umlimited talk plan with a set minute plan. I think its still a great deal for you.

I wish these would work for us, but we have three iPhones and pay about $125 to $140 per month. AT&T's Mobile Share would up that to $175 per month, and while it would be nice to avoid thinking about the overage charges we occasionally get, we aren't hit with them often enough to make paying and extra $35 to $50 every month worthwhile.

I'd prefer to see more on the lines of Virgin's plan, where you could pay less because you use less. :-)

I was not interested at all in Verizon's data share plans until I learned that they have unadvertised plans that go up to 20GB. We currently have 25GB spread over 3 devices + one "dumb" phone, and the usage is very lopsided: one person needs more and another needs less. The new share plan would solve this, but we would move from 4 lines/25GB for $250 to 4 lines/20GB For $260 - less data for more money, but more evenly spread. The thing I really hate is moving to $30 a month for the one "dumb" phone instead of $10. He maybe talks 30 minutes a month. I just wonder if I should wait to see if there is going to be a price war.

I was waiting and waiting for the Verizon share plan. We pay about $180 per month for two smart phones and two not-so-smart phones. I thought I could get my wife an iPhone and share the same 4Gb my son and I use. If we switched, our costs would rise to $210 per month just for the same plan. That's an additional $40 per month. Forget it. When my Verizon plan ends, we're switching to Virgin.

The math worked out for us, too. Three iPhones, one going over 300MB of data, one going over 200 texts, and totaling over 700 minutes some months. Now for about the same money per month, we can share 6GB data and not worry about going over on texts or minutes. Plus Personal Hotspot is included, and I am adding an iPad for $10 that can share the data.

Now if only AT&T would build out LTE in Seattle.
