TidBITS: Comments on The Insourcing Boom and Apple’s Influence

Some companies, such as GE, are unexpectedly shifting manufacturing from China to the United States. Although Apple isn’t mentioned in an article in The Atlantic about the trend, the reasons for the shift are undoubtedly Apple-inspired.

This is a very good news. I am tired of seeing plants closing all over America. As a consultant, I look at the companies I had as client during the last 10 years and it is sad to see so many closed (not because of me). I am also tired of those lame products that are filling our dumps. Apple in general is not impressive as far as recycling goes, but if they could manufacture in America, that could help. We have a new law in Quebec that will help recycling by charging it when you buy the product.

May be another reason for Apple's manufacturing success is that it's powerful enough to place manufacturing priorities ahead of political priorities!

This seems to be slightly old hat as I thought it was accepted that assembly represents a relatively small percentage of the total manufacturing cost. USD10 is a figure I've seen quoted for iPhones in reputable sources.

Moving manufacture to the USA might impress some Americans, I'm not sure it would impress the vast numbers of Apple customers who are not American. But then I'm a Brit who has worked and lived in the Far East :)
