Mountain Lion link works fine. YouTube link thru Safari on iPad says event will start today at 4:51 PM. Curious. Thanks for remembering about the quieter keyboard.

Christian--it has started. Try refreshing your browser.

Adam Engst

Yes, reload the page if you're not seeing it. Or go to YouTube or Google+ with the links above.

@Chris S, yes, 2 GB really is kind of minimal these days.

01:21 PM | ||

For those lacking video: I suspect you need Flash (ugh!) If you've sensibly removed Flash from Safari, you'll need to use Chrome (which has Flash internally).
01:22 PM | |
Charlie
Shouldn't you upgrade and then backup?
01:23 PM | |
MEC
Charlie: no. Backup first so you can revert is stuff goes wrong.

"if" not "is"
01:24 PM | ||
Adam Engst
But, Charlie, Joe recommends updating your bootable duplicate before actually performing the upgrade.
Nina

No, what he said is to make a clone of your current hd *before* upgrading, so you are safe if something goes wrong with the upgrade.
01:25 PM | |
Bill Kish

I bought all of the Lion books and iCloud. I read your Installing. Then I proceeded. I go into safe boot to do Super Dupper so that all apps such as Office 11 Outlook are not running an my files are not locked. Therefore I turned off FileVault2 and did my full backup.
01:26 PM | |
I continued the install and had no problems. Did a new partition Super Dupper backup. Restarted FileVault2 in ML. Absolutely no problems.

01:27 PM | ||

There you go, Charlie! :)

So, for those with a literary criticism background, the Installer is a self-consuming artifact.

Hate, hate, hate that self-destructing installer. C'mon Apple…

I have a 2009 MacBook Pro with a Core 2 Duo processor and 4GB of RAM which so far has run only Snow Leopard. I know it is capable of running Mountain Lion. I considered upgrading to Lion last year, but I was put off by reviews on the App Store and elsewhere in which many people complained that on a spec similar to mine their system slowed down a lot. I am apprehensive about upgrading to Mountain Lion for the same reason, especially as Snow Leopard does everything I need. On the other hand, I suspect that Apple will soon withdraw Snow Leopard support. If I upgrade, will my system slow down?

Hi - about the recommendation to switch off the antivirus app - the same goes for HandsOff. I did not realize this at first and I started wondering why no byte went my way. Switching off HandsOff solved the problem-

I upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion. It went well, but I did notice that my Japanese system fonts are no longer present, and I can't figure out how to get them installed. I used the fonts for some writing I do, so I do need to get them back in. I've googled it to try to find other people who have seen this issue in upgrading to Mountain Lion, but I had no luck there. Any suggestions? (Thanks for doing this session!)

@Brian Thomas, yes, you can exclude files from duplicates, but that's a really dangerous thing to do unless you're certain you have them elsewhere. Too easy to lose data that way -duplicates should be duplicates.

Back during the Lion upgrade there was a lot of talk about PowerPC programs. I was asked to help a friend who was in the process of upgrading from SnowLeopard to Mountain Lion, when the upgrade was completed her MS Office would not work. No mention of PowerPC problems with Mountain Lion. I wonder how many people will get caught?

01:51 PM | |

Things like Little Snitch and ClamXav should be OK - what causes problems are utilities that filter traffic based on specific strings found in downloaded content.

@jack holly, if it's not sniffing traffic, you should be OK. But it never hurts to turn it off, either.

It's always best to disable or temporarily uninstall anything that resides at a low level in the operating system. I would definitely uninstall anti-virus before installing a new OSX.

Lion DiskMaker works for Lion and Mountain Lion. They didn't change the name. This can also be used to create a DVD, though this is not as preferable as a flash drive for speed reasons.

I wonder if you could take a USB 3 premium flash drive (like Lexar Triton) with 64 GB on it, and install ML and apps on to that and use that as a boot drive. You could use that with different Macs. Have you tried this?
Would this work at all?
chris hart
YOu could definitely install it on a flash drive and use it with whatever system is compatible.

The question in such a situation is if the USB flash drive can handle the constant activity - they aren't generally designed that way.

That's true that a flash drive probably isn't great with regard to the high number of read/write cycles. But for infrequent use it should be fine.

(thanx chris hart) Just occurred that USB 3 is fast enough to potentially approach hard drive responsiveness. Maybe we'll get USB 3 drives that *are* designed for robust read/write. Something to watch for.

I have severa portable FireWire/USB drives with osx installed, that I used to boot a wide variety of systems on a regular basis. Works great. (Flash drive is just a different storage medium for the same concept.)
No reason to remove PPC apps. They are of no harm. They simply won't work.

Occasional boots are fine, I'm sure, I just wouldn't use a flash drive as a boot drive for a long time.

They should have come to Portland and captured some great grey clouds for a distinctive cloud-like background. Why does Linen mean cloud?
chris hart

Linen is simply apple's current "generic" background -- it's not specifically icloud
02:33 PM | |
Paul

Copy-Paste also works to duplicate and "move" a file to another location, like on Windows.

If you have sensitive information that you wish to share between several machines, have a look at Wuala, which encrypts all files before pushing them into the cloud.

Dropbox encrypts before transmission as well.

Jochen Wolters

Speaking of which: Adam, is there any information if/how iCloud documents are encryped during transportation and storage?

Adam Engst
@Jochen, we'll ask - I don't know.

TMK, Apple never provided detailed info about the security/encryption of iDisk. Wouldn't expect them to do so for iCloud.

@chris Ah, but then it's an informed decision. :) I just wonder how many Dropbox users are not aware of this (potential) security issue. What's more, you can run both Wuala and Dropbox concurrently just fine, if you want to reserve high-sec storage to _some_ of your documents.

Good to see that apple has been forthcoming about encryption with iCloud. don't' think they ever did that with iDisk. Disappointing to see that it's only minimum of 128 bit security. They are vague about what you might get above that.

Dictation. what (approx) is the limit of chars/time before one must click Done? (32k, else)?

Alter Ego
Matt, ideas are generally valuable for others to use--not "stealing", unless there is some restriction--patent, NDA, etc.
chris hart

@lamike that sounds like a good approach (using Hazel for iCloud/dropbox syncing) but of course it means that the system running Hazel needs to be on/awake/online 24/7
03:02 PM | |
MEC
The only applications that can provide iCloud support are those that Apple delivers: either their own software or from third parties in the Mac App Store. Mac App Store requires that apps be sandboxed. For technical reasons, BBEdit can't be sandboxed and retain the feature set that its users rely on. So it can't take advantage of iCloud integration.

@chris S how did you get the thing into your sidebar

@Chris If you inadvertently delete a file, and want to restore it, it won't matter if you call it "Backup" or "Archive". If it's gone, the archive/backup is useless.

Am I missing something, or did Notification Center lose the sleep/delay options that were previously available in iCal notifications?

As far as I'm concerned, off-site backup should not be treated as a primary backup/source for older documents. It should only be a "my house burned down" backup. If you want protection against "uh oh" moments, you should really make that happen with your on-site backup.
