Welcome to TidBITS Presents "Explaining the Big 3 Confusions with Messages"!

Good Morning, I'm a bit early.
11:26 AM | |
Adam C. Engst
Good morning - I'm just getting everything set up on the page, so you may need to reload to get everything to show up.
11:35 AM | |
Michael_L
That's fine. I'm working so by having it on now I'm more likely to remember when it starts.
11:36 AM | |

Hi all!

Hi, Adam!

Nancy
Hi, Adam.
12:03 PM | |
Michael C.
I left the Hangouts page for the TidBITS Presents page so I could annoy you with comments. ☺
d
is there a fourth confusion?
Lauri
Lookin' and soundin' good fella!
Nancy
Am I supposed to be getting a picture?
12:05 PM | |
Adam C. Engst
Reload the page if it's not showing
Nancy
Done that 3 times, I'm just getting a black square with a spinner
12:06 PM | |
Adam C. Engst
Try one of the other places you can watch in the list above.
12:07 PM | |
@d there are undoubtedly more confusions! :-) If there's time after, we'll see if we can answer more.

Let's all call Glenn's phone! (Just Kidding. Don't call him!! He's busy right now.)

Sometimes when I've been using messages on my Mac, I leave the office and an iMessage gets delivered there instead of to my iPhone. Any way to prevent this?
12:10 PM | |
Adam C. Engst
@swright Sounds like your iPhone doesn't have the same email addresses configured to receive
12:11 PM | |
Lauri
How does using different email address on each device affect syncing? Will you see all conversations on all devices when different email addresses are entered on each device?
12:12 PM | |
Paul Collins
I notice his "Start new conversations from" is phone. I thought of using my email instead, thinking some people would recognize my email more easily. Which works better?
12:13 PM | |
Mark Williamson
Ouch! Crashed my Safari.
Michael C.
Paul: either one works. Use the one that works best for the people you message. For some, the phone number would be best. For others, it might be the email address.
12:14 PM | |
Too much recursion! Awesome.
12:15 PM | ||
Adam C. Engst
@Lauri Good question - we'll ask at the end
Paul Collins
Nice tip - I'd never tried that "menu" which looks like a disabled button. Sigh.
12:19 PM | |
Adam C. Engst
@Paul That totally threw me too

I'm assuming the phone number shown in the preferences panel on the Mac and iPad comes from setting up Messages on the iPhone using your iCloud account. I've heard of one case where the phone number that shows up on an iPad doesn't belong to the iPad's owner, even though she uses the same iCloud account everywhere. How can that happen?
Paul Collins
@Phil: rogue SIM card? (if 3G iPad)
12:20 PM | |
Adam C. Engst
@Phil Sounds like an iCloud hiccup. It does happen
Mark Williamson
Phil, might it be the "phone number" associated with the SIM card and 3G account?
12:21 PM | |
Phil G
The phone number actually belongs to her son... so probably not a rogue SIM.
Mark Williamson
Has her son ever used her Apple ID for iCloud?
Paul Collins
A lot of confusion can happen when someone doesn't realize they've got two apple IDs or iCloud ID going.
Phil G
Good question. I'll look into it.
Adam C. Engst
Ooo, that's where they hide transcripts!
12:23 PM | |
swright
Exactly!
12:27 PM | |
nope messages configured the same
12:28 PM | ||
both have same IDs
messages on Mac set to send from mobile number
so what if screen is locked and messages in foreground?
12:29 PM | ||
d
if you set availability to away but still has focus, will it still send notifications to the phone?
12:30 PM | |
Mark Williamson
@d: Isn't availability only for the iChat half of Messages?
Adam C. Engst
@d availability has no place in iMessage, so that shouldn't matter
Lauri
I read that in Messages, if the text bubble is blue that is sending via Messages. If the text bubble is green, it is SMS.
12:32 PM | |
Adam C. Engst
@swright I don't know about screen lock
Michael C.
Yes, Lauri, that is correct: blue for iMessage, green for SMS, undetermined for color-blind users <g>
swright
Thanks - great presentation and great attention to my question
12:33 PM | |
john
would it be possible to store chat transcripts in Dropbox or similar?
12:35 PM | |
Adam C. Engst
@John Don't think so, but I'll ask
Mark Williamson
Little hard to read at this size.
Lauri
I notice when saving the conversation history that the conversation is loaded in the message window when a new conversation is started with that same person. Is there a concern that too much history with that person could "overload" Messages?
Barry
I don't have the option 'to be reached at' my iPhone # in the accounts pane for my iMessage account....just the option to add emails
12:37 PM | |
Mark Williamson
Maybe, but it makes it easier to resume talking to your regular folks.
12:40 PM | |
john
thanks to you both for doing this!
12:42 PM | |
Lauri
