Coverage of the third-generation iPad continues with Adam’s guest appearance on the Tech Night Owl Live podcast, hosted by Gene Steinberg. Adam and Gene talk a bit about the new device’s technical specs, but the name (or lack thereof) of the new iPad keeps coming up.

Many of us chat online during Apple product announcements, and the recent introduction of the new third-generation iPad was no exception. But this time, a number of us reconvened afterwards on the MacJury podcast with host Chuck Joiner to talk through the impact of the iPad’s new Retina display, new camera, voice dictation, and other features. And no, we don’t all agree, so be sure to listen in to our individual arguments and opinions.

Steve Sande over at TUAW explains how you can beam photos between iOS devices using Apple’s new iPhoto app. It’s a fine feature, but requires iPhoto on both ends of the connection and makes us wonder why Apple didn’t build it into iOS’s Photos app instead so everyone could use it.

Over at Macworld, Glenn Fleishman explains the ins and outs of the 4G LTE mobile broadband service available in the third-generation iPad. LTE is certainly faster, but it’s also better at providing a consistent and reliable Internet connection.

Apple sent out a press release over the weekend highlighting what just a short time ago sounded like an impossible milestone: the 25 billionth App Store download. (Yes, that’s ‘billion’ with a B — just imagine Carl Sagan saying it in “Cosmos.”) The celebrated app in question was Disney’s Where’s My Water? Free, a game where you help friendly Swampy the Alligator fix the plumbing in the city’s sewers where he lives so he can take a shower. The app was downloaded by Chunli Fu of Qingdao, China, who will be receiving a $10,000 iTunes gift card.

Nick Bilton of the New York Times reports that a loophole in iOS’s security infrastructure enables apps you have allowed to determine your current location to access all the photos on your device (presumably due to the location information stored within photos). Although there are no known instances of this capability being abused in the wild, a proof-of-concept app commissioned by the New York Times showed that it could upload photos to a remote server once it had been given location permission. Apple will likely fix this soon; in the meantime, we recommend turning off unnecessary permissions in Settings > Location Services.

Fraser Speirs digs deep into iTunes U now that the service has graduated beyond offering free iTunes Store lectures to its own iOS app. Speirs teaches at a private school in Scotland, and is an Apple Distinguished Educator whose schedule has lately been packed with travel and speaking engagements related to how he’s implemented a program that provides an iPad for every pupil.

The story so far: Avatron created the Air Dictate app to use the iPhone 4S’s speech dictation for dictating into apps running on your Mac. After initially approving it, Apple pulled the 1.0 version from the App Store, citing Avatron’s use of a non-public method of invoking Siri, so Avatron revised Air Dictate 2.0 to eliminate that interface approach. Now Apple is rejecting the app for lack of compliance with Apple’s trademark guidelines, despite the fact that the app nowhere uses the word “Siri,” the Siri icon, or anything other than the standard iOS interface of starting dictation when you raise the iPhone to your ear.

Instapaper developer Marco Arment says that iOS gives him “far too much access to [the data in the user’s] Address Book without forcing a user prompt.” TidBITS staffer Matt Neuburg has said much the same thing in his Programming iOS book: what sense does it make that an app has to pass through all those Core Location permission gateways in order to access your photos, yet can freely and without notice examine, copy, and delete the information in your Contacts and Calendar databases?
