Hyperspace 1.3
Software developer, podcaster, and writer John Siracusa’s Hypercritical has released version 1.3 of the Hyperspace space-reclamation app (see “AppBITS: Hyperspace Reclaims Space Used by Identical Files,” 19 March 2025). To reclaim space on your hard drive, Hyperspace finds identical files, then uses a standard feature of the macOS file system to create space-saving clones of all but one of the files. After adding support for package directories (Photos libraries, for example) in version 1.1 and cloud storage files in version 1.2, Hyperspace 1.3 adds support for scanning Library folders. The update also introduces a setting to enable notifications when tasks complete, improves handling for files that change in the middle of a scan, and improves progress bar accuracy and display. Alas, despite the additional places it searches, Hyperspace still only identifies 3.25 GB of possible savings for me.
John Siracusa pinged me on Mastodon to make sure I was using all the new options, and indeed, I was not since they’re all turned off by default. When I turn them all on, Hyperspace could save 9.82 GB, mostly from cloud storage.
Curious as to how each option played a role, I did a little testing and got these results (each number is theoretically independent, though I may have had the Inside Packages switch on for some of the later ones).
