Migration Assistant Update for Mac OS X Leopard
What affects Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard may be afflicting 10.5 Leopard too. Less than a month after updating Snow Leopard’s Migration Assistant to fix a problem migrating data to a new Mac running 10.7 Lion (see “Update Migration Assistant before Upgrading to Lion,” 19 July 2011), Apple has now released Migration Assistant Update for Mac OS X Leopard, which has almost exactly the same description:
This update addresses an issue with the Migration Assistant application in Mac OS X Leopard that prevents transfer of your personal data, settings, and compatible applications from a Mac running Mac OS X Leopard to a new Mac running Mac OS X Lion.
So if you’re running Leopard now, be sure to get this update before you move your data to a new Mac running Lion. We presume it will appear in Software Update if appropriate to your Mac; if not, download it from Apple’s site. (Free, 4.98 MB)
What does it mean when the installer reports that my HD/computer does not meet the requirements of this program/updater? I'm running a 2.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro, OS 10.6.8.
Does Lion have to be installed first?
It means you're not running the proper version of Mac OS X for the update. In this case, it's for 10.5 Leopard, and you have 10.6 Snow Leopard (which previously received a Migration Assistant update).
Hi, I had my macbook (snow leopard) replaced by apple with a macbook pro (lion) , and simply backed up one final time before wiping the machine and sending it back to apple. Therefore, I cannot update Snow Leopard, as that computer basically no longer exists. Anyone got any suggestions to fix this problem?
I don't think there's anything you can do, other than hope that you don't run into the problem when migrating back to your new Lion-equipped Mac. Apple hasn't said how this problem really manifests itself, so it's possible that's primarily a problem going from one Mac to another, not from a Time Machine backup to a Mac.
