Take Control of Apple TV, Chapter 5: Master AirPlay
With AirPlay, you can play audio and video content from your Mac or iOS device on your Apple TV. You can also mirror your entire screen to the Apple TV, so whatever you see and hear on your device, you also see and hear through the Apple TV. And, in 10.9 Mavericks you can turn the TV attached to your Apple TV into another display for your Mac, just like any other external display. Read on to learn more, including how to prevent your prankster neighbors from playing video on your Apple TV without your permission.
I'm curious to know if there is any way in iOS7 to tell if an app *does not* support AirPlay. Right now, the only test I can find is trying it out with an Apple TV. Showtime's lack of support is vexing right now. It seems like it would be such an easy thing for Showtime to enable it instead of adding an Apple TV channel.
In iOS 7, Apple seems to be moving developers away from in-app AirPlay controls to Control Center, so it seems that just trying it out (or reading reviews) is the only way.
Weird that Showtime doesn't offer AirPlay. Then again, it was weird when HBO and Amazon didn't. My guess is that it's one of those things that could potentially break a lot of complex legal agreements, so these big companies have a team of lawyers pour over it for months before taking action. And given that these are big, slow companies with not a lot of financial incentive to offer AirPlay, it just makes the process all the slower.
At one time I think Air Play was only offered on some Macs and Air Parrot picked up the slack (vaulting media from those Macs to Apple TV). Is that still the case, or what's the mix of devices supporting Air Play?
Any Mac produced in mid-2011 or later should support it.
Josh, I'd like to hear about traveling with Apple TV and iOS/Mac equipment including pros & cons, necessary accessories, capabilities for business and personal use. I'm not sure if this would warrant a separate chapter or better fit in an existing one? Apologies if I've missed discussion on this already.
Thanks, Dale
You're in luck, Dale! I have an upcoming chapter just about that.
This is something I always wondered, but had never the resources to test it out. An extra chapter would be excellent. Then countless mobile Mac Users could profit from this eBook.
maybe featuring the eBook in this Podcast: http://freakshow.fm/author/timpritlove (aka "mobileMacs") via @ApfelTutor
Any way to play movies stored on a hard drive connected to an Airport Extreme without powering up a Mac?
Josh, I'm very interested in keeping the audio with my iOS device/Mac so that I can listen via earbuds rather than the clunky wireless headset I now use with my TV. Roku handles this via earbuds that connect to its remote. Any other tricks or tips that give more control of audio would be most appreciated. Looking forward to the travel info chapter too!
Thanks, Dale
