Prosoft Engineering has released version 3.1 of its disk repair utility, Drive Genius. This update features a revised disk defragmentation utility that no longer requires the user to boot from a DVD or a different hard disk in order to defragment the system volume. Instead, users can simply install Drive Genius as an application and run it. ($99, free update, 18 MB)

The update is $49, it's not free.
No. The UPDATE for users of Drive Genius 3 is free. The UPGRADE from versions prior to 3 is $49.
I'm going to have to write a short explanation article about this, since someone else was confused on a different one.
If it's a major version (2.0 from 1.0) and has a price tag, we call it an _upgrade_. If it's within a major version (1.1 from 1.0), we call it an update, and those are usually free.
We don't always list upgrade prices when it seems likely that most people will be taking advantage only of the free update, since the previous major version change was a long time ago. Clearly we need to be a bit more careful with that.
does drive genius 3.1 defrag as soon as fragmentation takes place?
