Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 14.2.0
Microsoft has updated Office for Mac 2011 to version 14.2.0 (also labeled as Service Pack 2) with improvements for connecting to Microsoft’s SharePoint collaboration service as well as a variety of tweaks and fixes for Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word. For the entire Office for Mac 2011 suite, the update enables Mac OS X 10.7 Lion users to drag and drop files in the Document Connection app (for uploading files to SharePoint sites) and it provides access to documents stored at the root level of a SkyDrive folder. Additionally, Italian and German grammar checkers have been improved. In Outlook, the release fixes issues that could cause database corruption, improves
IMAP email syncing with Gmail, and brings a new sync model for Exchange where email messages are downloaded in parts. (But make sure to back up your Outlook data first; some users are reporting problems with the update!) PowerPoint now supports Lion’s full-screen mode and adds the capability to paste special hyperlinks into the app. For Word, the update improves printing PDF faxes and fixes an issue where user information wasn’t saved into a Word template. For a complete list of changes, read the Microsoft support page. (Free update as a download or through Microsoft AutoUpdate, 110 MB)
The upgrade corrupted Outlook's Main Identity and Outlook's preferences. Judging by the wait time to speak to a MS Technical Support person (90 minutes) and from the posts on the MS support page, this upgrade has not gone well as far as Outlook is concerned. Be sure to back up your Main Identity before upgrading.
WARNING - don't install this update if you're running off Kerio Connect as it's not compatible at this time.
If you do, you'll end up having to reinstall MS Office.
See Kerio's article - http://kb.kerio.com/article.php?id=932
Beware of this update if you are using Gmail IMAP. I have several such accounts and it caused around 6,000 messages I had filed in other mail folders to reappear also in the Sent Items folder (Iie. attached multiple labels). Attempts to move any of them out using another machine running Entourage were thwarted by Outlook periodically undoing all my work. I have now disconnected the Outlook machine pending further investigation.
Thanks for all the warnings, folks - sounds like it's best holding off on this update if you're relying on Outlook for email. Hopefully the necessary fixes will be available soon.
I WISH I had not made this upgrade! Life is miserable now.
I'm still using the 2004 version of Office/Mac on OS X 10.6.8 [on an iMac with Core2Duo]. I've put off upgrading to any of the newer versions of Office for a variety of reasons. I'm considering it again. I use ONLY Excel, Word & PowerPoint. Nothing else. I'd appreciate comments on these 3 Office 14.2.0 apps on OS 10.6.8 and Lion. Thanks.
Microsoft has now posted about these problems, recommending a database rebuild before updating and offering a workaround if you've already updated.
