Real Software has announced it is shipping REALBasic 2.0, an upgrade to its Macintosh software development environment. (See "Yes, Virginia, There Is a REALBasic" in TidBITS 443.) According to Real Software, REALBasic 2.0 is available in Standard and Professional Editions; the $100 Standard Edition claims to offer performance enhancements as well as numerous programming features such as new interface elements, improved support for multimedia, better control of PPP connections, improved Apple event support, new localization features, and support for double-byte character sets. The Professional Edition, priced at $300, purportedly adds a single-user relational database engine, ODBC remote database connectivity, and the capability to compile REALBasic applications for Windows 95/98/NT. REALBasic 2.0 can be purchased directly from Real Software; academic pricing discounts are available.
