SaveScreenie Switches File Formats — A few weeks back, I mentioned that you could enter a particular command into Terminal to change the format Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger uses for screen captures made with Command-Shift-3 and Command-Shift-4 (see "How to Change Screen Capture Formats" in TidBITS-785). Needless to say, it’s not hard to copy and paste such a command, but it’s about as elegant as a waltzing kangaroo, so Christian Franz of cf/x decided to embed the functionality into a small utility as a way of getting to know Apple’s Xcode better. The result is the free SaveScreenie 1.2, which presents you with a few radio buttons corresponding to the available formats (PNG, PDF, JPG, TIFF, BMP, PSD, and PICT); select one, click the Set button, and log out or restart your Mac to have it change the screen capture format. After Christian showed me the initial version, I made a few wording suggestions (once an editor, always an editor) and recommended that he include a Web page link for each format that would tell the user more about that format.
