Venting in Photoshop CS4 Crash Reports
You know how many applications, when they crash, ask you for more information what you were doing at the time of the crash? Well, Garrett Murray spends a lot of time in Photoshop, and when it crashes, he sometimes feels the need to tell Adobe just what's on his mind at the time. The result is a hilarious collection of crash reports that make for great reading - one only hopes that the Photoshop engineers have enjoyed them as well.
I did the same for Fireworks CS4, which would crash when quitting. Adobe acknowledged the problem but said they wouldn't fix it since if you saved your file before quitting your data was safe. After enough angry letters, Adobe relented and recently offered a fix.
I like doing the same thing, although less verbosely and probably less cleverly.
Fortunately PS CS4 gives me an opportunity to up my game since I get a crash report every time I quit normally. I'll work harder.
I am, however, worried that when I upgrade to CS5 these crash reports will disappear. Guess I'll stick with CS4 ;)
A new window has opened. I've always tried to be accurate and clear in my reports. I have been missing a universe of fun!
To be slightly more serious, I get frequent CS4 crash report dialogue boxes even when the program hasn't crashed. On those occasions when it has crashed - usually due to an errant plug-in - I respond in a serious manner. When I'm presented with a crash report after having quit normally I usually report that fact, then have a bit of fun.
I have sent shorter but sarcastic comments as the frustration of having the stupid 'you crashed' box appeared every time I quit Illustrator CS4. Yesterday Photoshop actually crashed and I was surprised I didn't know what to say. It did it repeatedly. OK so I thinks to myself, what could be going on? Then it occurs to me, I set the program to open in Rosetta in order to open some old stuff that the program refused to recognize. So I went to the info window and turned that off. I restarted the program. I went back to what I'd been trying to do. This time a dialog box popped up and said (I paraphrase) "hey stupid...this document is open in another application". Oh yeah I say to myself I had peaked at it in Preview and forgot to close it. Lesson for today: When running Photoshop in Rosetta you don't get this warning, it just crashes. Unfortunately, I didn't figure this out when I had a dialog box from Adobe so I thought I'd detail my thoughts here. Thanks for your indulgence.
