Update to Flash Player 10.3.181.22
If dealing with MacDefender weren’t enough, Adobe has now released a new version of Flash Player to address an important vulnerability. Adobe says:
This universal cross-site scripting vulnerability (CVE-2011-2107) could be used to take actions on a user’s behalf on any website or webmail provider, if the user visits a malicious website. There are reports that this vulnerability is being exploited in the wild in active targeted attacks designed to trick the user into clicking on a malicious link delivered in an email message.
To determine what version of Flash Player you’re running, visit the Adobe Flash Player page, which tells you your version and what the latest version is. If there’s any mismatch, download the latest version (10.3.181.22 currently) from the Adobe Flash Player Download page.
In the previous release of Flash Player for Mac OS X, 10.3.181.14, Adobe added a System Preference pane that provides automatic update notification. We assume this means that Flash Player will notify you when future updates are necessary; ideally it will also automatically update Flash Player as well.
Regardless, we strongly recommend upgrading to the latest Flash Player to take advantage of the automatic update notifications and eliminate the known vulnerabilities.
I have a couple of PowerPC Macs still going strong. So I'm disappointed to see the new Flash Player is Intel-only, especially when the major feature is a security fix.
Adobe's Download Flash Player page erroneously says "Universal Binary for Macs."
Also in the preference pane are the controls over use of the camera and microphone by flash monsters. You may wish to go to at least the "ask me" level. These settings were present before, but required right clicking on a flash monster to reach them.
I have to second Ward's comment. No updates for my 3 PPC machines.
My previous Flash Player was version 10.1.x. I just upgraded to 10.3 but can't see any System Preferences Pane for FP in Mac OS X 10.5.8...
BTW: Where on my hard disk is Flash Player?
I'm not sure why the System Preference pane might not be showing up - Flash Player claims it's compatible with 10.4 through 10.6.
The Flash Player plugin is in:
/Library/Internet Plug-ins/Flash Player.plugin
Thanks; the Flash Player plugin is there, FP preference pane still missing. Probably after a restart? (Will see later...)
The restart today did it, thanks guys! FP now is visible in System Preferences/Other.
Weird, the Preference Pane worked for me in OS X 10.5.8, I think I was upgrading from an earlier version of 10.2 that pre-dated the Pane. The Pane icon is the in the bottom row, "Other." They're arranged alphabetically so for me it's between DivX and Flip4MacWMV. Were you using Fast User Switching? Maybe it couldn't update the Pane with other users logged in. A restart likely will fix it. The relevant file should be /Library/PreferencePanes/Flash\ Player.prefPane
The comments about now-operating but aging PPC systems is applicable not only to the Flash Player, but also to other products such as Skype and even Firefox, both of which induce you to "upgrade" only to find out that the system requirements aren't met (Skype told me after it had installed the new version, after which I had to find the old version and re-install). Grrrr.
Downloaded the update for Flash yesterday - today, can't view most things that require Flash. Tried to download again. Still, no viewing possible.
