Watch Joe Kissell and Adam Engst in TidBITS Presents: Adieu MobileMe
Our first TidBITS Presents event on 16 June 2012 was a success, with over 200 people joining Joe Kissell and me live via Google+ Hangouts On Air. Joe did a stellar job with his presentation, as I knew he would, and the attendees contributed lots of great questions and comments via Google+ and Twitter (where we congregated using the #tbpresents hashtag).
Part of the attraction of Google+ Hangouts On Air is that the video is automatically recorded to YouTube (and our buddy Mike T. Rose of TUAW told us it was even live on YouTube during the event). So, even if you couldn’t make the live presentation, if you want to learn about your transition options before MobileMe sunsets on 30 June 2012, you can watch TidBITS Presents: Adieu MobileMe on YouTube at your leisure. The added beauty of having it on YouTube is that you can also watch on an iPad in a comfy chair, on the big screen connected to an Apple TV, or while you’re killing time on an iPhone or iPod touch.
Please do leave us comments (at the bottom of this article, in the Google+ post, or on YouTube) about both the content of the presentation and (if you watched it live) your technical experience, since we heard from some people during the event that the video was either nonexistent or very choppy. We’re still trying to determine just how well Hangouts On Air works for viewers in different situations.
Thanks for watching, and we hope you find the content useful!
Oh, one last thing. Joe mentions a number of services and products and articles in the presentation — here’s a list so you don’t have to hunt them all down manually or take notes while watching.
iDisk Replacements (storage, syncing, sharing)
iDisk Replacements (Web hosting)
Gallery Replacements
Other Products, Services, and Articles
Well done! Great start! Look forward to more!
MORE, MORE, MORE....iCloud, MobileMe and all the rest of Apple's cloud crap has driven me to slam my laptop lid more than once. iDisk and the whole MobileMe sync thing has never worked for me but I'm a ton wiser now that 2 hours ago and my next move will be to buy Joe's book! Thanks guys, do it again.
Video quality overall was good throughout (mid-level broadband connection) viewed in Safari, only a couple of bumps -- and those I suspect were due to all the multitasking I was doing (multiple windows, G+, YouTube, Twitter). Joe and Adam audio good, volume good. Smooth slideshow integration by Joe. Great hosting by Adam with several sources of social network Questions.
Good to hear! I noticed a couple of video freezes on my side that did end up in the recording (this was in the Q&A at the end - I'd start speaking, so my picture would become the main one, but it would be frozen for a few seconds before it would recover).
Why is that whenever you see a video freeze of your face, you have a dopey expression? :-)
Having done some video editing over the years, I've come to realize our "normal" faces are created in the mind of the observer who takes these many dopey snapshots and blends them into a not quite so grotesque, and often almost lovable, face. ::grin::
I once looked at every frame of a 2 minute video, and there was not one "normal" expression on the face of the presenter. And yet, on the moving video, the person looked normal, or at least relatively normal.
Still watching the video, but enjoying it so far!
Thanks. Joel.
Didn't work on my iPad 3. Started out OK on my G5 iMac but video kept getting darker like a screen was being pulled in front. Finally it was totally black. I gave up even though the audio was OK.
I wonder if the G5 couldn't quite handle the necessary video processing... It certainly should be able to, but you never know.
You mentioned BusyCal, but if you wish to keep using iCal there is their other product BusySync, which uses Bonjour and does what MobileMe did for synching calendars.
Yes, and you don't even need BusySync to get iCal to talk to iCloud - see http://tidbits.com/article/12669
BusySync isn't getting much attention these days, so I'm not sure I'd recommend starting to use it now.
The live event was not available to me (in Germany). It said "Video not available". I can watch the recorded YouTube video afterwards, however.
Well, that's a bummer! I wonder if there was a technical limitation or some policy-related issue in Germany.
Thanks for all your comments! For our first attempt, we think it went pretty well! And we are definitely talking about doing more online video presentations of various sorts in the future.
We're aware of the iPad issues, and although that's a problem Google will need to solve, we are also investigating other services for future video that may be viewable on iPads. We haven't found a perfect solution yet, but we'll continue to explore.
Any chance if a transcription? I don't generally spend time with videos unless they are movies...
If someone wanted to transcribe it, we wouldn't stop them, but I can't see any economically feasible way to pay for a transcription of a free event. We're talking about what would be involved in making slides available.
Unfortunately when I tried to connect to the live feed a message appeared on my iphone which indicated the format could not be viewed on my device. I will watch the YouTube video on my Mac.
Yes, the live presentation itself required a Mac, but the YouTube video can be viewed on any device.
Great to have the YouTube feed, as I missed the original presentation. Great job, guys
I've just got done watching the video via YouTube - great job guys!!
Adam - LOVE the giant penguin in the background - we had one the same until a niece played a bit rough with it and caused a sudden penguin depressurisation.
I wanted to add a comment on the homepage.mac.com pages - I created my first one about as soon as it was possible to do so, and added to them sporadically over the years. I was VERY reluctant to think that these olde pages might go away, so set out to figure out how to retrieve them in their entirety so I could host them from my own server. Details are posted on my blog - I hope it might help someone even at this late stage.

That penguin was a present from a friend in Australia - brought all the way from down under. :-)
Thanks for the link to your blog post - it looks like it could help others who are in the same boat!
I want to thank you guys for putting this video together. It was like you were speaking directly to me. I had been procrastinating on upgrading to Lion and taking care of my MobleMe site. After viewing your video I took care of those tasks with minimal pain.
That is so exactly what we wanted to hear! :-)
sorry I missed this live, was flying across the pacific. but since then got to watch! fantastic! even with all my research, you still had some new info.
heads up, just got an email from zingzang, that they are closing shop at the same time (end of the month). can forward if you want a copy.
keep up the good work. I emailed Adam a couple months ago about this, and really appreciate his personal response. you guys are still the ones with the best answers. thank you!
Yes, I'm very depressed about ZangZing closing its doors too.
