Apple Releases Diversity Report
Following in the footsteps of other tech companies, Apple has revealed statistics about the diversity of Apple employees. Unsurprisingly, Apple is mostly composed of white males, of which CEO Tim Cook said, “As CEO, I’m not satisfied with the numbers on this page. They’re not new to us, and we’ve been working hard for quite some time to improve them.” However, Cook did not offer specifics on how he plans to achieve that, but he did mention three women who have recently been hired into executive roles at Apple: Angela Ahrendts, Lisa Jackson, and Denise Young-Smith.
I'd rather Apple hire the BEST qualified person for the position instead of trying to be Politically Correct and hire an incompetent just to meet some asinine "diversity".
A perfect example of not getting it... These statistics aren't about trying to set up some quotas or to change qualifications for any particular job. It's about being transparent about how the workforce is different from the population as a whole. There are many possible reasons that some populations are under/over represented. Having this data out there will allow all kinds of organizations to investigate why some populations are over/under represented. It could turn out to be something Apple is doing that discourages some qualified applicants, which they can learn from, but the big picture will be more societal. Policy makers and charities that value diversity can push to level the playing field in other ways so that the application pool more closely resembles the population as a whole. Better education for underrepresented populations being only one example of a possible way that publishing these numbers can have a positive effect without lowing standards or enforcing quotas.
