Comparing the Classic and Unified Views in iOS 26’s Phone App
I suspect many TidBITS readers are of the generation that still uses the iPhone as a phone. Heck, many of us remember rotary phones that needed actual dialing, and some may even have had party lines, which were, sadly, a lot less fun than they sound now. Since then, phones have switched to keypads, gone cordless, shrunk and grown again, and become our constant companions. As a result, we’ve grown accustomed to the iPhone’s Phone app, and for the most part, it works reasonably well.
Nonetheless, Apple decided to redesign the Phone app for iOS 26. Some of the redesign revolves around the new Liquid Glass design language, so the bottom toolbar and top controls hover over scrollable call and contact lists. But Apple went further, introducing a new Unified view that combines the Favorites and Recents screens, shuffles the toolbar buttons, and hides a number of call lists behind a menu. In a tacit acknowledgment that the people who use the Phone app the most are the least likely to be amused by a twenty-something engineer’s design opinions, Apple made it possible to continue using a Classic view that retains the same layout as in recent versions of iOS.
So let’s take a look at the two views and see if the twenty-something engineer working on the Phone app in iOS 26 did a better job than, let’s face it, the twenty-something engineer who last designed the Phone app. Spoiler—the Unified view is an improvement, primarily because it reduces the likelihood that an errant tap will accidentally initiate a phone call. Whichever you decide you prefer, you may learn some things from the article—I certainly did while writing it.
First, so everyone knows how to switch back and forth, make sure you’re in Recents (if you’re in Classic now; below left) or Calls (if you’re in Unified now; below right), and tap the menu button in the top-right corner of the screen. In the menu that appears, you can switch between the two views (and filter the call list, which I’ll get to later).
Since the various screens in the two views aren’t directly comparable, let’s compare the tasks you need to perform between the Classic and Unified views.
Dial a Number
Talk about dated terminology! Nevertheless, we still “dial” numbers by typing them into a keypad. As you enter numbers, the Phone app autocompletes against your contacts, so you can always stop typing and tap a matching result from the list. Amusingly, it matches both the actual numbers and the letter equivalents (so 2 could be A, B, or C). None of this is new, nor is the hidden feature that lets you touch and hold the blank area above the keypad to bring up a Paste button for pasting a number from the clipboard. But I couldn’t resist sharing that tiny tip.
As far as I can tell, there’s no difference between the Classic (below left) and Unified (below right) versions of the Keypad screen. They look and work identically, and both are accessible via an always-visible toolbar button.
Find a Contact
Let’s say you want to call a friend you haven’t spoken to recently, so you need to look up their number. (Of course, the number is irrelevant in today’s world, but it’s still how we talk.) Regardless of view, you’d start by tapping the Contacts button.
There’s only one cosmetic difference between Classic (below left) and Unified (below right) views. In Classic view, Apple kept the Search field at the top of the screen, where it glassily hovers over the scrolling list of contacts. In contrast, Unified view places its Search button in the toolbar at the bottom. It’s still one tap to start a search.
The search functionality also differs. The Classic view’s Search field is dedicated to searching contacts, as you’d expect, given that it’s tied to the Contacts screen. However, the placement of the Unified view’s Search button on the omnipresent toolbar gives away its enhancement—it finds both calls and contacts, with any matching calls listed first. If there are more than five calls or contacts in the results, a See All link reveals the rest.
Both approaches have their advantages. The Classic view’s dedicated Search field is more obvious and returns only contacts, as you’d expect from starting a search in that screen. The Unified view’s search is more capable, so you don’t need to switch to the Contacts screen before searching, but finding a contact may require scrolling and possibly another screen, though savvier users can refine their searches to reduce unwanted results.
I’d give a slight nod to the Classic view’s approach here. The Search field is more obvious and returns less ambiguous results. But the Unified view’s rethinking of search eliminates the need to decide whether you’re searching for a contact or a call.
Call a Favorite
To simplify calling the people or organizations you communicate with most frequently, you can set a contact as a favorite. In Classic view (below left), a standalone Favorites screen displays a scrolling list of user-arranged favorites. The list can get fairly long because the Phone app lets you create favorites for multiple communication channels: different phone numbers, Messages, Zoom, and so on. I used to have separate favorites for each of my parents’ mobile numbers as well as for their landline, which they eventually dropped. Regardless of view, tapping a favorite calls it or starts a message.
In Unified view (below right), Apple moved favorites to the Calls screen, displaying up to seven favorites with the newish contact poster format, which is sufficiently fussy to set up that almost none of my contacts have done so. (You can create your own posters for contacts, but it’s a rather involved process that requires editing the contact, finding a photo, and choosing between the avatar and poster.) If you have more than seven favorites, up to four more appear as tiny icons in the eighth spot; tap it to see the full scrolling list.
By adding favorites to the Unified view’s Calls screen, Apple is trying to simplify starting a call by putting favorites and recent calls right up front. That’s not unreasonable, and it eliminates the need for the user to pick the screen from which to start the call. If you have seven or fewer favorites, it’s a win. With more favorites, you may have to bring up the full list and scroll.
For calling favorites, I prefer Unified view, although Classic view can display more entries. Unified view is slightly easier to use and more attractive, particularly if you take the time to customize contact posters for your favorites.
Work with Recent Calls
Although the Classic view’s Recents screen and the Unified view’s Calls screen seem quite similar, there are in fact numerous differences. On the Classic view’s Recents screen (below left):
- Incoming and outgoing calls appear, but calls that resulted in voicemail do not. That makes a twisted sort of sense, given that there’s a separate Voicemail screen.
- An always-visible All/Missed filter lets you easily see missed calls. Again, the missed calls list doesn’t include those that resulted in voicemail.
- An old-style Search field appears at the top of the screen and disappears out of view as you scroll. Why isn’t it a floating Liquid Glass field? Like the Unified view’s Search button, it finds both calls and contacts, which feels weird on the Recents screen.
- Tapping a recent call dials it, whereas tapping the ⓘ button to the right opens the contact card associated with the call. I have hated this interface with a burning passion for years because it’s far too easy for a stray tap to start an unwanted phone call that I must then frantically cancel and often explain in a message to the accidental recipient so they don’t call me back.
In contrast, on the Unified view’s Calls screen (below right):
- The Recents list shows all incoming and outgoing calls, as well as missed calls associated with voicemail messages. The addition of voicemails works more the way I expect.
- The All/Missed filter disappears. Filtering the view to show only missed calls requires tapping the Filter button in the upper-right corner and selecting Missed. Even though there’s also a Voicemail filter, the Missed screen also shows missed calls that resulted in voicemail.
- The app-wide Search button finds both calls and contacts, which feels sensible because it’s at the same interface level as the Calls and Contacts screens.
- Tapping a recent call shows the associated contact; to redial the call, you must tap the blue phone or camera (for FaceTime) button to the right. That’s far more sensible and will reduce the number of inadvertent calls.
The only downside I see to the Unified view is that you see fewer recent calls before having to scroll. If you receive many calls per day, you might need to scroll slightly less in Classic view. However, the way that the Unified view’s Calls interface reduces the number of calls I accidentally trigger with an inadvertent tap is a huge win. I’ll be using the Unified view purely because of this change.
Did you know that, regardless of view, you can now swipe left on any call to reveal a blue clock icon that lets you create a reminder to call back in 1 hour, tonight, tomorrow, or at any custom time (below left, slightly doctored)? Reminders appear at the top of the Calls list and in your default Reminders list. You can also touch and hold a call associated with a contact to connect with them in other ways (below right), or touch and hold a call from an unknown caller to add them to Contacts.
Listen to Voicemail
Catching up on voicemail messages is easy in Classic view—just tap the Voicemail button on the toolbar to see the full list, with transcript excerpts or Apple Intelligence–created summaries (below left). There’s also a tiny P icon next to each one to indicate that it came in on the Primary eSIM; presumably, if the secondary eSIM received voicemail, it would have an S icon.
Unified view is, again, both easier and a bit more involved. It’s easier to access your most recent voicemails on the Calls screen because they’re mixed in with recent calls. You can identify them quickly because they’re in red (since you missed the call), have the little P icon, and either have an excerpt or summary or the word Voicemail under them. However, seeing just voicemails requires tapping the Filter button and choosing Voicemail (below right).
While I’ve never been confused by the Classic view’s Voicemail screen, I am now a little bothered that its Recents list doesn’t include voicemail. Unified view gets it right by providing immediate access to recent voicemails and offering a slightly more involved way to limit the view to just voicemail, if you need to catch up on a bunch all at once. A point to Unified, again.
Unknown Callers and Spam Filters
In iOS 26, the Phone app can filter its call lists to remove calls from unknown callers, which seems to mean numbers that aren’t in Contacts or that you’ve never called. It can also filter out calls identified by your carrier as spam or fraud. Since these forms of call filtering are new, Apple made them optional in Settings > Apps > Phone.
When those switches are turned on, you’ll find Unknown Callers and Spam options in the Filter menu in the upper-right corner. I don’t know what the Spam list looks like because T-Mobile hasn’t identified any phone calls as spam yet. (I’ve definitely gotten some that are telemarketers; I don’t know how T-Mobile defines spam.) Unknown Callers, however, works well for collecting calls from numbers that you haven’t marked as known or added to your contacts.
The Classic (below left) and Unified (below right) versions of the Unknown Callers screen differ in the size of the page heading and the location of the Search field, which looks through both calls and contacts regardless of view. A more important distinction is made clear by how the Classic view puts an ⓘ button next to each call and the Unified view displays a phone button. As with the Recents/Calls screens, in Classic view, tapping an entry calls it; you must tap the ⓘ to get info about it. In Unified view, tapping an entry displays its info; you must tap the phone button to call it. Again, the Unified view’s approach is far more forgiving of accidental taps.
In either view, for any call in this list, you can tap Delete to remove the call (and optionally report it as spam) or tap Mark as Known to prevent it from being caught again—either by moving the call to the Calls list or by adding it to a contact.
I’m glad I took the time to pore over the differences between the Classic and Unified views. Otherwise, I would never have realized that Unified view flipped the previous behavior of initiating a call with a tap anywhere on a recent or missed call. That alone is enough to make Unified view my choice, but even beyond that change, I think it’s better. Even when it comes to something as basic as phone calls, there’s room for improvement.









Interesting. Today I came to the opposite opinion and reverted to Classic. I just missed the functionality of a full list of Recents in it rather than having just the few below favorites in Unified. That and voicemail being clearly indicated. I’m obviously all about those missed calls.
Same here, it’s especially bad on the small screen SE I use. Can’t believe it has taken so long to fix this. Thanks for pointing it out, I might have missed it and mistakenly stayed with the Classic.
I think that makes sense for you—without scrolling, the Classic view’s Recents screen shows about 8 calls (on an iPhone 17), whereas the Unified view’s Calls screen shows only 4. I make and receive few enough calls that I don’t really care about anything past the last one or two.
I’m confused. In the text, you say the Unified view shows nine Favorites plus up to four more in the tenth slot. But the images you included show only eight slots for Favorites, with seven full-size plus the smaller ones in the eighth slot. Why the discrepancy?
Party lines. My only knowledge of them is that delightful comedy film “Pillow Talk” directed by Michael Gordon and starring Doris Day and Rock Hudson… and Perry Blackwell singing “You lied”. Ooh!
I don’t know if that’s an iOS 26 thing? On my phone, still on iOS 18.7.1, missed calls that go to voicemail appear in both the Recents and the Voicemail lists. I will also see a badge on both Recents and Voicemail.
A very helpful article. I had figured out most of the Unified View but you made some things clearer. I’ve updated to Unified and it seems to work well for me.
Regarding Spam and unknown callers , I would very much like Apple to enable silencing unknown callers by line or SIM. I live in two countries and have two local lines. In one country spam callers and unknown callers are extremely rare in the other one plain unbearable (up to 700 in a month) so I have no choice and must silence those calls before they disturb me. And so, I also miss normal calls in the country where an unknown caller could simply be a normal person you had no contact with in the past. Seems quite simple.

Looks like you’re right—I was able to confirm on Tonya’s iPhone, which is still on iOS 18. So the iOS 26 Classic view is mostly, but not completely like the Phone app in iOS 18.
I also noted that the iOS 26 Phone app summarizes voicemails, perhaps only with Apple Intelligence on, which the iOS 18 version does not do.
In Unified view, I can find no way to display Favorites as a list. Classic defaults to this.
It doesn’t matter that Favorites appear on the same screen, I just don’t want to look at a gallery of faces. I want my favorites as line items. Has anyone found a way to change that in Unified?
You can’t change the way Favorites appear in the Calls list in Unified view, but it you tap the Show All item in the eighth spot, it shows everything in the traditional list.
Although you see two fewer entries in the contact poster format, the seven that do appear are presented with a higher information density.
So if you mainly want to interact with the first seven items in your Favorites, Unified view is more efficient, but if you have more than seven and want to interact with the later ones in the list, Unified view may require an additional tap to see them. I say “may” because if you’re on the Classic view’s Recents screen, you still need a tap to get to Favorites, which is the same as the tap on the Show All button on the Unified view’s Calls screen.
I’ll fully admit that I didn’t like Unified view when I started writing the article. But once I realized that Apple had designed it quite carefully for quick access to the most recent calls and most used favorites, I became more favorable toward it. And eliminating the inadvertent calls makes me very happy.
Hmmm. I assume you did this for Tonya and Tristan in the example image you showed? I tried to follow along for my daughter, but ended up with a blank image on the Recents screen, where the avatar she had previously shared used to be. I see the photo I selected for her on the Contacts screen, but it somehow doesn’t carry over to the Recents screen.
Yeah, and the fact that you had trouble gives me all the more incentive to write up instructions. It took me quite a while to figure out a reliable process.

If I delete the voicemail, does the call appear where it would have appeared had there not been a voicemail? Or is all record of it gone?
I’m certain that was true for me recently, but I just checked on iOS 18.7.2 and calls with a voicemail are not in my Recents list. Maybe it was a change from 18.7.1 to 18.7.2?
Yes, deleting a voicemail does remove the call from the Calls list. Which makes sense—the voicemail is an aspect of the call, not some separate thing.
I don’t agree that it makes sense. Due to carrier restrictions and the weird way voicemails sync with the mobile carrier, iPhones have a limited voicemail capacity that is completely unrelated to the amount of storage on the iPhone (or in iCloud). (Personally, I find that very irritating. If I want to save 100 or 1,000 voicemails, I should be able to do so.) Consequently, I have to regularly delete my voicemails. I want to be able to delete the voicemail but still see the last time a contact called me.
It’s not my experience that the iPhone has a limited voicemail capacity. I recently wrote about how I have every voicemail on my iPhone since 2018. But if you have somehow turned off Visual Voicemail or you have a carrier that doesn’t support it, perhaps things are different.
Interestingly, there’s a better way to see when someone has called you—the Call History screen accessed from their contact. This won’t help you, because it’s a reflection of the calls that remain in the Phone app, so if you delete a voicemail (and the assoicated call), it disappears from the Call History.
I don’t know if the iPhone does, but some carriers or plans might. I got a warning a few months ago I was out of voice mail space so I went in and deleted a bunch of old ones. Unfortunately it was long enough ago that I don’t remember many details, and I didn’t check anything like storage used before and after deleting them. I do have the lowest end plan I can get, so it wouldn’t surprise me if they limit voicemail storage.
While I don’t doubt this is what happens, I don’t agree it should. A “call” has a number of attributes—that it happened, the date and time it happened, any voicemail left. Deleting one of the attributes (the voicemail) shouldn’t delete the others.
But I’m not running 26 yet, so maybe I misunderstand how the new Phone app and layout works. I do know that on 17, Voicemails also appear in Recents, and deleting a Voicemail doesn’t delete the call from Recents or the list of calls if I tap the i-in-a-circle next to the call (I just tested it).
The VM storage limit discussion piqued my interest—I don’t do many things via voice calls so I’ve never run into VM capacity problems—and I found this explanation via Perplexity:
According to Asurion, carriers set the limits and, typically for the mobile phone industry ugh!, can charge for more storage.
Why not just delete your voicemail and text messages after you download them to your Mac? I do this periodically to keep a searchable archive of all voice recordings (.m4a) and text messages (.txt).
Apart from a couple of messages from my late friend Oliver, I have no desire to save voicemail messages at all. They’re just not interesting to me. Nor do I wish to waste my time managing them manually, but it turns out that I should do that to some extent or I’ll be preserving voicemail messages from spammers forever.
FWIW, at least Apple makes it simple to delete voicemails as they come in. A quick left-swipe wil send them to the trash individually. To delete in bulk, click “Edit” in the voicemail list view and select the ones you want to delete. When convenient, empty the trash.
I’d switch to the new view in a heartbeat if there were an option to have all calls show in the call log (unless filtering is on, obviously). But hiding voicemail and missed calls permanently behind that toggle, that’s a deal breaker for me. I hope Apple will add that option in an upcoming 26.x update.
I’ve switched back to the classic view, not a fan of the unified view.
With regards the Spam filtering, it’s not an option on my iOS26.1 phone. Is this a carrier specific setting?
I don’t see that at all. The Recent calls list includes the same items as the classic version. The main difference is that if a voicemail was left, the same text snippet from it that appears in the voicemail list appears in the item in the Calls list.
I see 2 major differences between the Classic and Unified versions:
The Unified version has buttons for the first 7 favorite numbers with a button that expands to all favorites to make it easier to call them.
The Favorites and Voicemail buttons have been removed from the bottom of the screen:
Voicemail is now separately visible via the Filtering icon in the top right corner of the screen
Favorites can be edited via the Edit button in the top left corner of the screen. Favorites editing is now like editing app placement on the iPhone’s main screen. It may be easier to temporarily restore Classic view and tap the old Favorites button at the bottom of the screen to perform the edits.
You’re absolutely right and I stand corrected.
I by now realized Apple does in fact give me the option to turn off the unknown auto-sequester. And with that in place, I then, only after comparing sections of my past calls log other than the most recent (due to unfortunate coincidence), realized that the other sections in filter, like missed or voicemail, were exclusive whereas calls was indeed all-encompassing so that just selecting calls means you do get to see it all. That in fact turns out to be more than what the “classic” call log showed since it split out voicemail.
So with the proper adjustments made to Settings > Phone, the new view works well for me. I don’t need many favorites (just one row of 4 is fine) and so I do like that I get one screen that allows for both speed dialing (with easy to hit large targets) as well as call log. Could be a bit deeper (denser entries?), but 6 is quite useful.
This reminds me a bit of the iOS 18 changes to Photos where you got one screen that tried to show you at a glance 90% of what you’ll likely need. It appears though, I was the only person on the entire planet who actually liked the new Photos layout (along with its massive individual configurability, not very common for Apple I’d claim) so 26 promptly rolled back the one view to rule them all. But not dramatically so, so nothing I’l lose sleep over. I’m curious to see if Apple will tweak the new Phone app here and there, or if this will be it at least until 27.
The one thing I’d like to see changed with the new unified call view is that voicemail entries are somehow better distinguished from the actual call that went to voicemail, or any other call actually. There is a small V there, but that’s far too subtle for my aging eyes to really use as a cue. Perhaps a different background color/shade could serve as a subtle cue.
Thank Ghu for this article. I had to spend an hour this morning guiding my 70+ year old dad through fixing this; he was in a panic because he was trying to help my stepmom through a serious health problem and was literally afraid he had missed calls from her doctor or insurance company. Because with Unified view, he had lost the separate Voicemail tab and Recents tab, and he didn’t know how to interpret what he was seeing in the Calls tab.
I haven’t downgraded to iOS 26 yet, so I couldn’t help him using my own equipment; fortunately I vaguely remembered this article, and was able to find it after a few minutes’ searching. And it was a lifesaver.
It also makes me viscerally furious at the iOS 26 UI team. (And the iPad OS 26 team, for that matter; I downgraded my iPad first, and that was enough to get me to postpone doing my iPhone as long as possible.) I’ve generally been able to roll with the punches on UI changes like this (though I don’t want to if they’re this bad); but trying to help Dad really drove home how badly they can hurt people who aren’t very flexible and aren’t able to figure out ‘oh, voicemails are now bundled into the Calls tab, and oh, you have to tap this menu icon to filter that list to just show voicemails.’
