Don’t Bury a Wet Laptop in Rice! Better Advice from iFixit

What should you do if you spill a drink on your laptop or other electronic device? With more people working from home during the COVID-19 pandemic, the repair site iFixit is increasingly hearing this question. iFixit’s Kevin Purdy offers advice on precisely what to do if you get your laptop wet. Even if you don’t read his post in detail right now, file it away for future reference should such an accident happen to you.

Most important, ignore the old canard about burying the device in rice—it does nothing to soak up the moisture, it can cause more problems, and it wastes valuable time. Jessa Jones of iPad Rehab even has a video showing just how ineffective rice is.
