According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple plans to align version numbers across its operating systems by using version 26 for all platforms later this year, simplifying the currently complex numbering system. Adam Engst examines how we got to this point. He also reviews Jettison, a $6.95 utility from St. Clair Software that makes working with external disks easier by automating disk ejection before sleep and providing extensive control over disk handling. Finally, we briefly note that Apple has expanded its Self Service Repair program to some recent iPad models. Notable Mac app releases this week include BBEdit 15.5, Fantastical 4.0.13 and Cardhop 2.3.6, DEVONthink 3.9.11, SoundSource 5.8.2, SpamSieve 3.1.3, and Thunderbird 139.
Mark Gurman of Bloomberg reports that Apple will switch its operating system version numbering scheme from the current mess to identifying them by years. It’s about time.
